Unlike most animals on earth, humans have no universal sleeping pattern. It's true that most of us like to sleep just after the sun goes down and rise when it's back up again, but just about everyone knows someone who is completely backward and would rather wake up in the afternoon, see only a few hours of daylight, and live predominantly in darkness before going to bed again just before sunrise. It may seem strange to the rest of us, but these night owls like life that way.

Often the biggest hindrance to that lifestyle, though, is work. Because most of the world is active during the day, most business is also done in the sunlit hours, which doesn't leave a lot of options for the nocturnal, particularly those who want to operate their own franchise. However, there are at least a handful of home based business opportunities that would fit the night-owl lifestyle relatively well, and they fall into two general categories: work at home computer franchises and vending franchises.

Computer Franchises

The great thing about some computer franchises is that the work is predominantly done at home and doesn't require a whole lot of interaction with other people. That means that there are no real time restrictions on the vast majority of the work.

The Photo Archival Company is a good example of this kind of franchise opportunity. Helping clients compile family photos, digital pictures, and videos into digital or analogue collections, the work itself is only slightly interpersonal at the start of a project, when the franchisee collects the media from a client. From that point until delivery of the finished product, everything is in the sole hands of the franchisee, who has the freedom then to edit the project at whatever time of day works best for him. So aside from meeting the client for exchanges and some grass-roots marketing at times, everything about the business can be done during the wee hours of the night.

Another good one in a similar field is Flicko's. A professional provider of film equipment rentals, cinematographic services, and editing work, this is another great franchise business for the creative techie. And though equipment rentals and filming services will most often need to be done in daylight hours, when clients are working, the majority of the editing work can certainly be performed at the nighttime convenience of the franchisee.

Finally, a computer franchise that is less about creative visuals and more about using the internet to seek out information, Strategic Research Network is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to hole-up in a home office long after sundown and scour the internet. Clients contract franchisees to hunt down contact information for potential employees and find out what competing businesses are doing in the market. As long as that information comes back to the client in a timely manner, the franchisee is free to work from home whenever he operates the best.

Vending Franchises

The vending industry is one that's common to everyone and can succeed in anyone's hands, even in the hands of someone who likes to stay up incredibly late. Of course, depending on where a franchisee's machines are located, there may be limitations on when they can be refilled. Since most businesses close at 8 or 9pm, this means that the average vending franchisee will have to ensure that he's awake and moving in time to get inside such businesses to reload his machines before those cutoff times. But even with those limitations, he only has to be awake to start his small business operations sometime in the afternoon, and once deliveries are made, business planning and logistics can be done all night from the home office. That shouldn't be too hard for a night lover. A couple great vending business opportunities are DVDNow, U-Turn Vending, and Vendstar.

One of the first of its kind to reach the States, DVDNow provides movie rentals out of automated vending kiosks. For a much lower cost than the average rental shop and far more convenience, DVDNow kiosks give clients everything they're looking for, and all the franchisee has to do is find new locations, restock new movies in existing machines, and scoop up the pay.

U-Turn Vending and Vendstar are your more classic vending businesses, operating candy vending machines. Vendstar is a leading vending home business started by one of the most prominent and successful entrepreneurs in the United States. Their great claims are that they use only name-brand candies and that anyone can operate the business: from students to retirees, single women to married couples, and everyone in between. U-Turn Vending is much the same, with the one primary difference of their machine design. Instead of using a standard, one-sided machine, U-Turn Vending has developed a spinning machine capable of housing up to 4-times the variety of products an ordinary machine can, which in turn increases the income potential.

Work From Home, Work at Night

There are many reasons to want to work from home, and one is the freedom to work on your own schedule, which is particularly handy if you're a night owl. Though there aren't a lot of franchises that are capable of functioning under primarily nighttime conditions, there are some, and if night is when you work the best, it may be worth your while to pursue one of these businesses.
