If you're just getting started sewing it can be confusing. Besides learning so much new terminology, there is the physical aspect of sewing that is new too. But as more and more people start to sew to express themselves and make home decor, there will always be people who need help starting off. Do you fall into this category? If so, read on!

After having sewn for several years these are the five best beginner sewing tips for you.

1. Take some time to prepare your project and calm down. I remember how frustrated I would get when I first used a sewing machine. It's okay though - this is a new thing for you, so a certain amount of frustration will occur. Let it roll off you and it will be okay.

2. Thread your machine as well as you can. Read the manual or ask a friend for help. Threading is a critical issue for beginners, and having your spools in working order will really help.

3. Read through your pattern and any special instructions, completely, before beginning. Imagine how you will be connecting your fabric before actually cutting it to shape. This not only prevents waste, it will help you visualize the finished product.

4. Make sure your fabrics are clean and not damaged. Many people prefer to wash and dry their fabric before even using it. This is a good idea for clothing or household patterns. Also, make sure there are no holes or stains before you begin.

5. Before actually stitching the fabric together you can do a number of preliminary stitches by hand to hold it up. This process, called basting, makes it easier to do long runs of stitches with a machine. You can also pin the material together, or use sewing tape. It is a special type of tape that can be washed out.
